The Tomahawk East League gathered in Hanska on Friday night for a mid-summer celebration of amateur baseball. The large crowd saw a well-played ballgame by geographically divided All-Star teams from the east and west parts of the league. The East All-Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead early and held on for a 4-2 victory.
Hometown hurler Gary Wilfahrt, Jr. made the start for the East All-Stars. His defense erased a one-out single by Matt Baier in the top of the first, as he faced the minimum in the inning.
The East bats came out swinging on the bottom of the first, as they roughed up West All-Star starter, Jake Miesen. Wade French and Jon DeRock started with back-to-back base hits. French was erased when Steve Kloeckl reached on a fielder's choice. Landon Rathmann drew a walk to load the bases. Justin Schwecke started the scoring when he ripped a two-run single. Brady Mosenden followed with an RBI single to increase the home team's lead to 3-0. A double-play got Miesen and the West out of the jam.
Wilfahrt and Brad Hillesheim combined to keep the West All-Stars hitless in innings two through four. Stark pitcher, Joey Wahl came on in the top of the fifth. An error, combined with a hit batter, and a walk, loaded the bases for the West, but they weren't able to plate any runs.
Miesen settled in after the first inning and West pitchers didn't allow another hit, until Adam Heiling surrendered a double in the fifth, his second inning of work.
Zach More of the New Ulm Brewers took the mound in the top of the seventh. Derek Nachreiner led-off with a single. Elliott Serbus replaced Nachreiner when he reached on a fielder's choice. Erich Panitzke worked a walk and with two down, Andy Schwartz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Baier came through with a solid single, scoring two. The ball was misplayed in leftfield, but recovered in time to throw out Schwartz at the plate to end the inning.
Alex Frank was in his second inning of work in the bottom of the seventh when Kyle Helget started things with a two-bagger. Casey Lux followed with an infield single and Helget scored on an errant throw, pushing the East's tally to four.
The West All-Stars had a threat in the top of the eighth when they got two on without a hit, but they couldn't cut into the East's lead. David Krause came on in relief in the bottom of the inning. After walking the first two batters, his defense helped him out by turning a double-play. He ended the inning with a strikeout.
Jon DeRock took the hill in the top of the ninth in a save situation. He retired the side in order, preserving the win, 4-2 for the East All-Stars.
Matt Baier led all offensive players with three of the four West All-Star's hits. Derek Nachreiner got the other hit for the West. The East All-Stars had one hit each from: Wade French, Scott Knisley, Jon DeRock, Taylor Rolloff, Justin Schwecke, Brady Mosenden, Kyle Helget, and Casey Lux. The win went to Gary Wilfahrt, Jr. who worked two innings, facing just six batters. Jake Miesen was charged with the loss, working three innings, surrendering three runs on four hits. Jon DeRock earned the save, throwing the ninth and getting one strikeout.
The Jeff Cook MVP award went to Justin Schwecke who was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Thanks to Hanska for being a great host and to all who came out to support their favorite local ballplayers! Games such as this show that while uniforms and towns may be different, a great love for the game of baseball and excellent players are present all over the Tomahawk East! Best of luck to all teams as they move into the final month of the regular season!
