Another Extra Inning All-Star Game

6/28/19

The Corn Belt and Tomahawk East Leagues sent their all-stars to Stark on Friday night as the Longhorns hosted the 4th annual All-Star Game between the two leagues. In an effort to assemble the best possible team, the Tomahawk East League held online voting in which over 5,000 votes were cast to determine players at each position. For the first time, the host team pulled out the victory as the Tomahawk East walked off the Corn Belt, 9-8 in the bottom of the tenth inning.

The Tomahawk East started the evening's scoring when they batted around in the bottom of the second, plating five runs on four hits, including an RBI double from Stark's Zach Haala and a 2-run single from Sean Mathiowetz at his home field.

The Corn Belt took advantage of a lead-off walk in the top of the third to get on the scoreboard. The visitors cut the lead to one when Shawn Dollerschell of the Bird Island Bullfrogs ripped a 2-out three-run homer, making the score 5-4.

A couple miscues by the Tomahawk East, along with a pair of doubles, gave the Corn Belt an 8-5 lead in the top of the seventh. Now trailing by three, the Tomahawk East needed to battle back and Cole Wellmann provided the spark when he belted a two-run homer to get the home team within one. At his former home field, Searles' Craig Fischer tied the game at eight with a single which drove in Springfield's Branden Flock, who had reached on a double.

The teams exchanged zeros until the bottom of the tenth inning when Dylan Hillesheim from Leavenworth singled. He stole second and advanced to third on a Corn Belt error before Sleepy Eye's Jake Mielke drove in the winning run with a base hit, making the Tomahawk East the victor.

The MVP Award went to Hanska's Cole Wellmann who gave the Tomahawk East life with his two-run homer. He also pitched a three-up and three-down inning and played first and third bases as players moved to and from the mound. Both teams used a one pitcher per inning plan to not overwork any team's hurlers. Gibbon's Nolan Huiras earned the win striking out the side in the top of the tenth after a lead-off double. Willmar's Jack Baumgart was tagged with the loss, allowing one unearned run in the bottom of the tenth. New Ulm's Judd Davis, Springfield's Flock and Stark's Haala led the way at the plate with two hits each.

The win for the home team means the Tomahawk East League will again host the Corn Belt in the 2020 All-Star Game. Thanks to Stark for hosting a great celebration of amateur baseball! Best of luck to all the teams as they continue their regular season schedule before beginning league playoffs in late July! See you at the ballpark!
